Acomplia vs. other weight loss medicationsHow Acomplia compares to other weight loss pills
It is not easy to choose the right diet pill, especially considering how many different kinds of pills now flood the weight loss market. Phentermine, Reductil, Acomplia, Alli and other drugs provide consumers with a number of choices. Acomplia / Rimonabant / Zimulti is a product of a company called Sonofi-Aventis, the third largest French pharmaceutical company. This new diet drug is said to work by an entirely different mechanism of action than other diet pills, which is important when comparing the products in order to make the choice of which one to use.

What are the actions of various diet pills?
The mechanism by which Acomplia works differs from that of Phentermine, Xenical and Reductil. Phentermine suppresses appetite by changing the chemistry of messengers that tell your brain that you are hungry. Xenical works by blocking fat so it will not be digested. Reductil works by increasing the activity of chemicals known as neurotransmitters, specifically norepenephrine and serotonin, which regulate mood and appetite.
How is Acomplia different?
Acomplia ( Rimonabant ) works by blocking chemicals known as cannabinoid (CB-1) receptors that receive signals for “pleasure.” By blocking CB-1 receptors, appetite is also blocked, or suppressed. So people who take Acomplia end up eating less. Clinical trials comparing Acomplia to other diet pills show that it is effective in helping people to lose weight. In addition, blocking the CB-1 receptors may also decrease a person’s appetite or cravings for cigarettes. In fact, the same switch that gives people a craving for food when they smoke cannabis (Marijuana) is, in effect, turned off by Acomplia when it blocks the so-called cannabinoid receptors that are located in brain cells.
In studies, people who took 20 mg per day of Acomplia for a year lost an average of 19 pounds and 3.5 inches. Among those subjects, 39% lost more than a tenth of their total body weight while using Acomplia.
Comparing side effects
All drugs have side effects, some significant and some mild. A number of side effects are associated with diet pills. For example, Phentermine side effects often include difficulty sleeping, an increase in blood pressure or exacerbation of conditions that previously produced no symptoms. Dry mouth or a funny taste sensation, digestive problems, and rapid heart beat may also occur. In addition, Phentermine users have reported agitation, dizziness, tremor, chest pain and edema. Some people who take Phentermine also have difficulty exercising.
Reductil has similar side effects to the ones reported by Phentermine users. Additional Reductil side effects may include menstrual difficulties, headaches, anxiety, or depression. Xenical often produces oily stools or leakage as well as an increase in gas and difficulty controlling bowel function. These side effects are mainly due to the fat-blocking properties of Xenical.
Compared to other diet pills, the side effects of Acomplia are usually not as troublesome, though nausea, irritability, anxiety, depression, fatigue or upset stomach may occur. The positive effects of Acomplia tend to outweigh the side effects. These positive effects including lasting weight loss and a reduction in the urge to smoke as well as lower cholesterol levels, lower blood sugar levels and lower blood pressure - all positive effects of losing weight.
Because it has positive effects beyond weight reduction, it is easy to see why there is so much hype around Acomplia. An appetite suppressant that can also affect such an array of other conditions has not been available for some time. Some in the weight loss industry consider Acomplia to be a kind of “miracle drug” that can help people get more focused on the changes needed to lose excess weight once and for all. The fact that Acomplia may also be effective in helping people to stop smoking when it blocks the cannabinoid receptors in the hypothalamus of the brain gives it an extra edge over other diet pills.
